CHARLES GILLAM Charles Gillam is a self-taught artist who finds inspiration in the music of New Orleans, particularly Jazz and Blues legends. He spent his childhood, from age ten, watching the artists of Jackson Square and wanting to emulate them. His favorite and stongest inspirations are Herbert Singleton and well known folk artist, Willie White, who used to draw and paint with markers on his front porch while Charles watched in admiration.Using used brushes and left over paints some of the artists of the Square had given him, Charles would while away the afternoon hours drawing and painting. Later, he tried his hand at carving using cypress boughs he pulled from the banks of the Mississipp River. It was then that his art career bagan to take off! His work became known through Barristers Gallery in New Orleans and it was through them that Charles was introduced into the House of Blues in New Orleans. His work, most notably his totems, can now be seen at all the House of Blues locations.Along with his daily carving, Charles is also active in eradicating the illegal drug trade in his home town of Algiers. He is working to make his home a safer place for everyone who lives there. We think his efforts are worthy of mentioning here! Charles is a great person, and a man of honesty and integrity. He has always been a reliable source of Herbert's work for us as the two were friends in Algiers. Herberts death has effected Charles deeply and has driven him to carry on and continue in his footsteps. We know you will appreciate the purity of this beautiful art form as portrayed by Charles Gillam. |
