JIMMY LEE SUDDUTH

Blues musician, storyteller and legendary folk artist, Jimmy Lee Sudduth is perhaps one of the most famous and well loved of all. Those who have visited him at his home in rural Alabama are left with a memory they won't soon forget. Not only will Jim paint you a picture, but he'll also entertain you with his harp playing and stories.

For years he has created paintings combining "sweet mud"(mud and sugar)and house paint on wooden boards. They depict people, farm animals, his beloved dog, Toto, and some of his best work;his house paintings. Jimmy wanted to be an archetect and it shows in these sometimes vividly detailed renderings of houses from his neighborhood and his imagination.

To own a Sudduth painting is to have one of the crown jewels in folk art history.

WE ARE VERY SAD TO ANNOUNCE THAT

JIMMY LEE SUDDUTH PASSED AWAY 9-2-07

He was a cherished friend and artist in our gallery. We will miss his kind way and his amusing antics.

HAND PAINTED/ SIGNED GUITAR

When we visited Jimmy Lee in 2001, we asked him if he would consider painting a number of objects we had acquired, including two guitars, a cabinet door, and some old corragated tin. He said "sure!" and so we sent them along to him. We sold the tin pieces immediately, but the cabinet door stayed in our shop and the guitar lived in our home, specifically in the livingroom that we are now redecorating. It's a lovely piece and is painted on both the front and the back, as well as on the sides and neck. His signature in sharpie is on the front side. It can be hung, but it looks wonderful on a guitar stand as we had it displayed. This is a one of a kind item and must be incredibly rare as we've not seen another, if there is one. $1200 SOLD

see below for more pictures of this fabulous piece...
